Donny Deutsch on Fear of Failure

by Walter Naeslund on March 17, 2008

When picking up advertising executive Donny Deutsch’s business book/biography “Often Wrong, Never in Doubt” I was a bit skeptical. The guy on the cover looked… well… cheesy. And the title, I mean, isn’t it a bit smug to name a book like that?

Anyway, I must say that this far the book has exceeded my expectations. Sure, it’s not the most well written piece of literature I’ve ever read, but it’s really interesting and full of insight. And though I really don’t want to say this, considering the cheeseball cover photo, I identify with the guy.

Here’s a quote from the book that I really would encourage all CEO’s to read at least twice:
“Creativity is about freedom. In order for people to be free to create, they need to feel free to fail. You can’t fear failure. If you want to create a world that values creation above everything else, first and foremost you have to take fear out of the equation. You have to create a culture that can accept failure, live with failure, not be fearful of failure. So much of what we do in life as businesspeople is failure-averse. It’s amazing how many businesses and management teams and people I have met make their important decisions based on fear of failure, tripping up, or being ostracized. The driving force for them is not success; it is failure avoidance. No. You need to embrace failure.”

Looks like an interesting book and has very sound insights. venturing out to new horizons there is a risk of failure you won’t be able to discover new things if you fear failure.

I came across an entreprenurial site I want to share with you, the Young Entrepreneur Society from the http://www.YoungEntrepreneurSociety.com. A great documentary about successful entrepreneurs.
