Flying, Fighting, Inspiration

by Walter Naeslund on April 6, 2008

Considering how our job as communicators is to reach people’s hearts and minds, it’s striking how isolated we are. We sit in our fancy glass offices, drive our fancy SUV’s, go to our fancy gyms and eat at our fancy restaurants. Is that perhaps why we keep repeating the same old ads over and over again? (And no, I won’t start criticizing Guldägget again). Is that why we tend to turn every brand into a premium brand in our strategies? I really think we all need to go and actively seek out new activities, new people, and new places to keep things fresh. And we need to do it often. I promise to start working on that right away. You should too.

This Saturday consisted of two activities that were  perhaps not all new to me, but activities that I don’t do very often. The morning started out with some flying over Mälaren. After working on some 30- and 60-degree turns with my very own Tom Cruise (though he looks more like Ben Stiller) we headed down to Mariefred and Birka and checked out some old Viking grave sites from 500 feet.

Apparently my life depended on this bolt that held the propeller in place. Spooky.

Later, after doing some work on a new business pitch and making a quickie out to IKEA, we went to a big MMA contest (Mixed Martial Arts). Some amazing fighters were there competing, and overall it was a good event. Musse Hasselvall’s much anticipated fight against a Japanese fighter was unfortunately cut short because of an injury. To bad since both Musse and his opponent are very technical and fun to watch. Bobby, my trainer in five of my total of eight MMA sessions (I’m not very experienced in MMA as you can tell), won his fight which was a real nail biter. Go Bobby.

A McDonald’s meal with my buddy Sam, and later a glass of Xanté and late night talks in my friend Sara’s apartment ended an almost perfect Saturday. This is inspiration.
