My New Job: Design Agency Communications Strategist

by Walter Naeslund on January 16, 2008

Breaking news!

Where to read about it first if not on my blog:

From last monday I’m reciding in a new office on Kungsgatan. At a design agency, no less. So what happened? Did I get tired of advertising? Did I decide to kill my own agency Walter Naeslund? Well – no, and no. My agency is more alive than ever – so this is what happened:

Basically I wanted to get in earlier in the process. I’ve been talking a bit about it here on the blog, that I think we’re headed for a world of thinner slices of communication, catering to more specific audiences. This means we get a greater number of smaller and more diversified advertising solutions which puts much greater stress on brand personality congruency to keep it all together. Here I think that the design agencies must assume more responsibility since they’re heavily involved early in the process when the basis for the brand personality is conceived. For me it made sense to seek out a good and progressive design agency and be part of that process, while keeping my own agency for campaign work.

One design agency that I found particularly interesting was the Stockholm-based agency Identity Works. They work with some of Swedens best brands already (like ICA, Astra Zeneca, Cederroths, Arla Foods, Cloetta Fazer, KF Fastigheter, OLW, Skandia, V&S, Ellen, Semper) and more importantly, they presented an open attitude and a gutsy and creative ambition for the future. I was hooked.

My business card here will say Communications Strategist which is meant to describe the crossover creative/planner-role that I couldn’t do without if I tried.

These are exciting times.
