New York Wrap Part 1: Outdoor Advertising

by Walter Naeslund on March 16, 2008

I’ve been a bad blogger for a few days, so now you’re going to get a mini-series New York wrap up.

When walking around Manhattan you see a different kind of advertising than in Sweden. Not necessarily better, but here are some random examples:

Whopper. Fast. Good tonality. I love that they’re using an actual competitors box in the ad. This is a cool personality and tone. I want to be a Burger King person, not a boring McD-one.

Weight Watchers. Pun intended. Sure, this is a little Göteborg-ish, but it’s still pretty good I think. It’s exactly what Weight Watchers is about, and it separates them from most competitors. This is no diet, it’s a lifestyle, and a good one at that.

Sunsilk. Wall paintings are pretty common in NYC. I think it’s pretty cool. Much more genuine, urban feel to them than billboards. But anyway, these guy’s at Sunsilk obviously had a hard time choosing payoffs. So they took all three.
“Their hair tells a story”
“Make your hair happen” and
“Life can’t wait”.
All stacked on top of each other. Brutal.

H&M. While redoing the display at H&M, this is what was displayed. Does it show product? No. Does it convey personality? Definitely.

Obama vs. Hillary. Discussions went high all over Manhattan. Despite Manhattan being predominantly democrat, republicans where visible and discussed. When living in Sweden, you would never know there was a republican option at all, because of the swedish media democratic bias. Anyway, this image illustrated the intra-democrat slug fest quite well.

Dan Smith Guitar Lessons. Finally this guy. Who needs an agency when you have an axe?
