During yesterday’s Earth Hour a bunch of people met outside Högalidskyrkan in Stockholm to show their support. To see where they were going, they lighted their way with torches. One torch per person. Being there probably felt great, but consider the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere per unit of light from one of these paraffin-based torches. And since they were a bit cold after standing out there for an hour, they probably went home and raised their apartment temperature by a degree or so before turning on the stove to make a real carbon bomb of a meal from beef meat. It’s a bit like saying “I love you” without sincerity.
According to the Swedish newspaper DN, Swedish power grid officials claimed that The Eurovision Song Contest actually saved more energy than Earth Hour since nobody used power hungry appliances like microwave ovens, vacuum cleaners, and irons during the show. So I guess that if you really want to save the environment you should listen to a lot of bad pop music and walk in wrinkly shirts.
