Dear Spotify, Walter Loves Music Too, But Would Also Love To SHARE Music.

December 29, 2008

I’ve given some thought to Spotify over the past few days, and here are some of my thoughts. Perhaps I’m wrong and Spotify has gone social after all. But not in the spheres where I move and socialize. And I have tried to spark some collaboration and social behavior without success. These thoughts build upon [...]

Is IR The Killer Marketing App of Social Media?

December 26, 2008

Ok. Granted, I keep pushing all these “killer apps”. Last time it was honesty, this time internal relations (IR). But I really think this is worth looking into. And honesty has a great deal to do with it. A while back I wrote about how the breakdown of privacy leads to a better society and, [...]

Is It Me, Or Is Spotify Not So Social After All?

December 25, 2008

Sitting in front of the fireplace on christmas day, I can’t help but wonder why I even think about work. But I do. I guess it’s a sign that I love my job. On the table beside me lies a copy of The Economist’s special christmas issue. In bold blue, the headline question “Why we [...]

Death of Privacy For Brands

November 12, 2008

In the last post I asked the question whether the death of privacy will improve the quality of behavior in our society. I guess this is a bit controversial. But you can see the exact same thing for brands. And here is not very controversial at all. The privacy of brands is under heavy fire [...]

MySpace 2.0 Launched

November 10, 2008

A while back I wrote about MySpace on my other blog (which has been asleep for some time now while I’ve been busy with this one). Last night MySpace launched it’s 2.0 version, and that is of course big news for the world of social media. I haven’t played around with it much yet, but [...]

Social Media’s Finest Hour

November 5, 2008

In an effort to keep this blog non-political (oh well, at least a little bit of effort), we’ll not talk too much here about the political effects that this historic event will have on America and on the world (Yeahj! Go Obama cries Walter from his desk a little too loudly!). Instead, we’ll talk about [...]

New Categories, Old Thinking

November 3, 2008

The Swedish advertising award Guldägget just announced new digital categories. The categories are: 1. Interactive Category A: Sites Includes campaign sites and corporate sites. 2. Interactive Category B: Advertising Includes banners, mobile marketing and SEO. 3. Interactive Category C: Other digital media Includes widgets, applications, digital events, interactive tools and social media. This segmentation into [...]

Planner Discussions Missing The Point

October 29, 2008

There is a bit of discussion going on right now about what is relevant to measure in advertising. Some are claiming that only ROI is relevant, while others defend measuring intermittently and on different parameters like recall and recognition. So, who is right? Well – I would love to agree with the “only ROI is [...]

Jedi Training Lecture

October 27, 2008

Today will be a day of lecturing on globalization, economics, outsourcing, transaction costs, the upside-down Coase Theorem, and what that has to do with the changing media landscape. Try for example to do a parallell reading of Friedman‘s “The World Is Flat” and Forrester Research‘s “Groundswell” or Shirky’s “Here Comes Everybody“, and move straight from [...]

Death By LEGO

October 26, 2008

Image via Wikipedia I know that these are not new clips or anything, but they prove an interesting point. With “LEGO for adults”, a product that was originally intended for children expands its audience into a new category. It fascinates us to see what some incredibly creative people have put together using LEGO, and it [...]

If Tony Robbins Was A Planner

October 23, 2008

Some things are just so basic. So obvious. And yet, we sometimes seem to forget about them. In the world of advertising we are often up to our ears in cool designers, focus groups, and media choices that we forget the most basic aspect – human psychology. What makes us do what we do? I [...]

Is Social Media Scaring The Pants Off Planners?

October 14, 2008

Every once in a while you read blogs from ad people (mostly planners) where they question whether agencies can ever succeed in social media. The most pessimistic ones in the discussion refer to the lack of successful examples in the past. And sure, you could say that there aren’t many, even though there are definitely more than one (Nike+ being the one most often referred to).

Spotify Launches And MySpace Counters

October 9, 2008

Interesting. Spotify launched a couple of days ago, and I just got this in my Facebook-feed a couple of minutes ago:“Joakim Friedman is Spotify har inte AC/DC. Lyssna istället på www.myspace.com/acdc”.Loosely translated: “Spotify doesn’t have AC/DC. Listen to www.myspace.com/acdc instead”. (J works for MySpace).Go back and read what I wrote in the post before this [...]

The Social Media Wars Continue. Will MySpace Rise To Power Once Again?

October 7, 2008

There has been a lot of talk about MySpace lately. Remember MySpace? (It’s that social media place which always looked like crap because you had too much say about it’s design and too few tools to do it well). Anyway, I read about it again in Fast Company, and I get the feeling that this [...]

Force-Feed Clay Shirky To The Music Industry

September 22, 2008

If I could do one thing, it would be to force-feed this speech to people in the music business. And this, mind you, is from 2005.

An Oasis of Good Communication

September 15, 2008

Oasis releases a new album, and street musicians in New York are the first to perform the songs off of it. Trained by Liam and Noel Gallagher of course. I love this campaign. The Sjönell brothers at BBH New York engineered this thing, and it’s just solid proof of their  understanding for what makes people [...]
